At PTI, we know that there is often no "perfect" solution
for performance improvement. Individual performance issues require custom
approaches, and often, training is not the best solution to a performance
problem. When a training intervention is appropriate to improve performance,
we believe that adults learn best, and retain what they've learned, when they:
Experience a variety of instructional strategies and media.
Are supported by just-in-time performance interventions, like job aids
and electronic performance support solutions.
Receive coaching from supervisors.
Can immediately apply what they've learned to their jobs.
This multi-dimensional approach to learning often precludes
the use of a single medium, like computer-based training (CBT), or instructor-led
courses (ILT), in favor of a "blended" learning solution.
Based on client needs, PTI may recommend a stand-alone
Web-based or CD-ROM-based course or a blend of interactive multimedia,
instructor-led training, and hands-on instruction.
Blended Learning at Work
PTI's work with our partner, Lockheed Martin, and with the FAA, is a prime
example of our blended approach to total course development. Most of our
systems training programs at the FAA are organized so that students "learn a
little, then do a little."
To help students relate the training to their work, courses
are organized around job tasks and presented in a sequence of simple to complex
operations and normal to unusual situations. They often include:
CBT.
ILT.
Training in a simulated work environment.
Reference guides to be used back on the job.
User manuals for new equipment.
